The Adventures of Thelma and Louise

My Mom and I have been glued to one another since Friday. We have had one adventure after another on the road traveling. I think we have rightfully earned our title as the modern day Thelma and Louise.

Today's adventure took us to the construction site for ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition. This week they are working in the small, rural town of Jamesville, NC. The team from Extreme Makeover chose to build a home for a family of an Army veteran with a disabled child. In any small Eastern, NC town you will find community members willing to lend a hand to families like this. But sometimes all of their help is still not enough. Thank God for the folks at Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

My Mom is in construction. She is one of the most interesting people you will ever meet. She goes from heels and a suit to steel toe boots and hard hats a couple times a week. I guess that is where I get my cameleon-like tendencies. She is so passionate about her work, and teaches me so much all the time. With the passion she has for her craft and her caring nature, a project of this magnitude is of the utmost importance to her. Although I am able to be versatile, I am still very much a prissy, girly-girl. I do not "fix" stuff; I break it! So I had to suck it up and channel my inner Bob Villa today.
Luckily for me, today was mostly spectating. I was able to salvage my manicure for one more day, and even managed to get a slight tan on my arms and face (great bonus). I watched the crew pour concrete for the foundation of the home while neighborhood restaurants, churches, and schools volunteered their services to support the entire project.

I am amazed at how fast this home building project has progressed. It is such a beautiful site to see people volunteer their time to do something for their fellow man. I would have never thought that I would be excited to go outside in the dirt for someone else. The girl does NOT do dirt. But I did today; and tomorrow I'll do it again. My chest is burnt like a lobster, I am totally drained from the sun, and I feel tortured for having to look at that Hottie Ty Pennington from afar; but I am up for the challenge to make this dream a reality for this deserving family.Seeing people work together for charity is very inspiring. Maybe this is the little pick me up I needed to get me back on track.
Can't wait to share details of the rest of our journey!

Wow. Sounds like an awesome experience. Oh, and I'm with you on the don't do dirt thing.
